Dave and Kathy are in San Diego to meet their new grandson which gave me a minute to update the blog. I'm overdue and want Beck to have something to look back on besides just pictures so here's the story sweet boy...
My water broke just after we crawled into bed on Saturday night, the 23rd. Your dad was already asleep (that man can fall asleep at the drop of a hat... I'm so jealous) and when I leaned in to tell him the big news his response was a half coherent "that's pretty cool, huh?" Yes, Zach. Pretty cool. NOW WAKE UP! We headed into triage around midnight, was 5cm dilated and then admitted to labor and delivery not long after. We were given the choice to rest for 4 hours or walk around the hospital for 4 hours and see if my contractions would start on their own. Uh, we'll rest, thanks. Well 4 hours later and nothing much was happening so Pitocin was administered and BAM! there they were. I couldn't believe how the contractions went from scattered and maybe a 2 (on a scale to 10) to a 9 and only a minute and a half apart in such a short period. My knight in shining armor, the anesthesiologist, arrived and after the epidural was given I was checked and the nurses face said it all... I had jumped to 9cm dilated, then 10! and you were coming! The room was prepped and the stirrups were pulled. Once your shoulders made their way out I was given the opportunity to wrap my hands around you finish the job. I pulled you up onto my chest and tears came to my eyes. Surreal would be the only word to describe what had just taken place. You were (and are) absolutely perfect. The only not-so-great part was despite the epidural (I guess because things happened so incredibly fast) I felt everything from the episiotomy to the stitch up at the end. And the tears came again but for a different reason. Ah well, you were so worth it.
Once in recovery your big sister came to meet you. At first, Ellery was more excited about her cupcake than any baby but after an hour she warmed up to you and started patting your head. Here I was worried about her reaction to this little thing joining the family and taking a lot of her mom's attention, but it's been almost 2 weeks and she has been just the opposite of what I expected. Ellery has been so super sweet and more loving and affectionate than ever before. She helps me burp you, push you in the swing and even lets me know when there's more poopie to wipe up. (she pointed to the rotting remains of your umbilical cord and said "mo poopie")
I am just crazy about the family we've created and look forward to all that is to come.
